WELCOME TO THE CITY OF CEBU

The arrival of the expedition of Don Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Fray Andres de Urdaneta on April 28, 1565 marked the Christianization of the Philippines as well as the colonization of Cebu by the Spaniards. After bombarding the palisades of Rajah Tupas (nephew of Humabon) and destroying the village, Legazpi rebuilt the settlement and named it "Villa de San Miguel." Later, however, after finding of the famous Image of the Seņor Santo Niņo de Cebu by one of Legazpi's soldiers, Legazpi renamed the settlement: "Villa del Santisimo Nombre de Jesus" or Village of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. But in on history's lapses, nothing is recorded as to when or why Cebu finally reverted to its original name of Zubu or Zebu in pre-Magellanic times.
